How to choose the best ingredients for homemade dog food for dogs with allergies and other health issues.

Choosing ingredients that we put in our dogs’ food, is based upon our dogs’ health and health conditions such as allergies, immune issues, inflammation, irritable bowel, leaky gut, digestive issues, skin, coat, ears, and so forth. Then we need to consider the quality of ingredients that goes into their body. We can’t always afford for everything we feed to be grass-fed, pasture-raised, and organic, so we need to make choices, that’s what we will discuss.

Before we talk about specific ingredients we would add to our dogs homemade dog food, we need to actually cover what the nutritional needs are and where those sources come from.

  • One of the main ingredients when making your dog’s food is going to be protein. Proteins are the main building block of our dog’s health and when your dogs eat protein there are enzymes that are secreted which are called amino acids. Dogs require 22 amino acids that are categorized as essential and non-essential , these amino acids are utilized and provide structure, growth, maintenance, and repair of tissue.
  • Included in Protein is Organ meat which is nutrient-dense and rich in vitamins and minerals like iron, zinc, and manganese.
  • Bones are needed for calcium and phosphorus
  • Veggies are a good source of fiber and it is rich in vitamins and minerals that help to build a diverse microbiome. Diversity in the microbiome builds the immune system and can help dogs with allergies among other conditions.
  • Iodine is needed for thyroid health …. Needs to be supplemented.
  • Healthy fats provide energy and are necessary for the development of nerves muscles, connective tissues, hormones, and our good source of essential fatty acids
  • Adding herbs, nuts, grains, and mushrooms which can be very beneficial both medicinally and helping to balance the bowl as they provide vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, omega fatty acids, fiber, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

Let’s talk about each of these categories, let’s start with protein. There are different grades of meat starting with factory, farm, and feedlots vs pasture-raised, grass-fed,’ and or grass-finished, you even have stamps on meat, no hormones or antibiotics, humanly raised, and organic.

And so why does that make a difference to our dogs homemade dog food?

The real difference between them is what the animal eats. Factory farm animals are Grain-fed animals that are raised with a diet consisting of grain or grain byproducts. Grass-fed animals on the other hand are raised on a grass diet. Grass-fed doesn’t mean pasture-raised with are animals living in their natural environment outside in sun eating grass, breathing fresh air.

How animals are raised and what they are fed play a part in the quality of the food we feed.
The more natural, healthy, and happy the fewer stress hormones, and illness is in the animal resulting in a better quality of food.
You may be aware of the conditions in which factory farming. These are very unhappy and unhealthy animals that are fed genetically modified foods, they are given hormones, and antibiotics that can be harmful, and these unhealthy elements can be passed through to our animals and to us. You know the saying you are what you eat.
The main difference is the nutritional difference between a factory farm and pasture-raised. According to researchers, they found that one pasture-raised egg contains twice as much omega-3 fat, three times more vitamin D, four times more vitamin E, and seven times more beta-carotene than eggs from hens raised on traditional feed. From an agricultural standpoint, pasture-raised eggs are far more superior nutritionally.

Grass-fed beef usually contains less total fat than grain-fed beef, Grass-fed beef contains much less unhealthy fat than grain-fed it’s leaner. Grass-fed contain up to five times as much omega-3
as grass-fed beef generally contains higher amounts of vitamin B12, B3, and B6 vitamin A. Vitamin E. This antioxidant sits in your cell membranes and protects them from oxidation and at the end of the day, the choice depends on your preferences and values. Not everyone will feed their dog Grass feed and pasture raised, instead my preference is to feed higher quality organ meat. The healthier the animal is the healthier the organs, and when you think about it the organs’ function is to filter out toxins.   Factory-farmed animals are eating low-quality foods, that injected it with chemicals seems to only make scene to invest a bit more especially since Organ meat is so nutritionally dense and such a important part of your Homemade dog food

Important piece is It doesn’t need to be an all or nothing You can pick and choose.

And so let’s touch on vegetables. I don’t think we can breeze past the obvious and I have to make mention of GMO ( genetically modified organism) foods whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. There are over 25 countries that banned GMO’s, unfortunately the US is not one of them.

The biggest threat caused by GMO foods is that they can have harmful effects on the human body. It is believed that consumption of these genetically engineered foods can cause the development of diseases which are immune to antibiotics.  There are several studies that have been done on rats. August 2020 The Scientific World Journal The Effect of Genetically Modified Food on Infertility Indices: A Systematic Review Study. Talks about GM products and food safety is still a controversial issue, and it’s not completely accepted that GM foods are considered to be responsible for the development of infertility which appears to be a major global issue.  The main concern around GMOs is about dogs and humans that are immune-compromised that can be greatly effected.

In addition to GMO we also have to consider our foods being sprayed with chemicals. A frightening fact is that research suggests that low levels of pesticide exposure can affect young children’s neurological and behavioral development, it’s not a far connection on how this effects our animals who not only are smaller and there fore more effected but also are eating comercial foods that have been heavily processed. While rats are not the topic, but bless their little souls as another Rat study where they were fed for two years with Monsanto’s glyphosate-resistant NK603 maize (corn) and showed a increased in the development of  tumors and died earlier age than their counter partners in the control.

Moving forward, lets talk about how you can minimize these effects  and talk about the dirty dozen which are heavily sprayed vs the clean 15 that are minimally sprayed. I spend the extra bucks on organic if it’s on the dirty dozen list. Organic Vegetables have no toxic chemicals such as pesticides or herbicides sprayed on them, these I find to be safer for dogs that might be immune computerized.
These are a few foods I feed that are on the dirty dozen:
Strawberries
Spinach
Kale, collard & mustard greens
Nectarines
Apples
Bell & hot Peppers
Cherries

While on the other hand, I don’t by organic if it’s on the clean 15
Avocados
Pineapples
Papayas
Frozen sweet peas
Asparagus
Broccoli
Cabbage
Kiwifruit
Cauliflower
Mushrooms
Honeydew
Cantaloupe
